My Review

I am trying to learn how one does history and from what I've read this is the book to start with. This book was written from lectures Hall gave in 1961. He lays out various arguments about what it means to do history such as can a historian be objective, should they strive to be objective, how should they handle causes, and so on. Hall's writing is very clear although there was the occasional reference that was either too dated or English for me to understand. I opted for a more recent version of the book specifically to have the benefit of the introduction but I found Hall's writing so clear that it ultimately wasn't terribly necessary, although commentary is often nice to have. If you're interested in thinking about historical writing this is a good book to pick up.
